This toy was made by the Hubley Toy Company of Lancaster, Pa. circa 1920's-1930's. Something that always goes thru my mind when I look at this toy is the thought that Salvador Dali would probably have been right at home putting one of these amazing toys into one of his surrealistic landscapes. All of the paint on the toy is original in all respects. There is no touchup.The toy makes clicking sounds when pulled across the floor which imitates the chirping sounds of a grasshopper. The sounds are caused by a flat spring which moves across an iron gear on the front axle. The toy has all original, wonderful, bright, & pleasing paint. This is an excellent example of a Hubley grasshopper that is in far, far better condition than the average example normally encountered.The main section of the body is cast iron. The front legs, middle legs, & the back parts of the back legs are all made of iron. The front parts of the back legs are aluminum. This is the way that the toy was made. Inside the body is a large rubber tire with an iron center. The hubs of the front wheels are iron & the front tires are rubber.The toy still retains its original flat spring, original rubber tires, original coiled springs in his head. He also retains his original small & large legs. So, everything is original in all respects. There are no breaks, no cracks, no chips, & no repairs.There is a tiny bit of surface rust here & there inside the toy & on the extremities of the legs, This looks like it could easily be removed (if desired) with a few wipes with an oily rag. But, we will leave this up to the option of the buyer as we have left the toy just like we found it.The front sections of the back legs show some wear. Otherwise the toy is in wonderful condition & shows little wear. The precise lustrous & appealing condition of the toy is clearly shown in the pics. The toy measures 11 1/2" long with the back legs in upright position. The back legs in upright position measure 5" tall.
