Description
This is a no reserve auction with free shipping within the United States of America.  International customers please email to obtain shipping costs before bidding on this auction.Meta Morris Grimball was an employee of Gutmann & Gutmann and her prints were sold through a  Copyright: "Gutmann & Gutmann".  This auction is for one of her images entitled: "A Joy Ride" which is incorporated into a children's picture puzzle and into the image on the puzzle box cover. Thus two identical images are for sale at this auction. I have been collecting and selling dolls; toys; prints of children playing with dolls and toys; early photographs of children playing with dolls and toys; and puzzles for over forty years.  I am rating this puzzle as a "RARE ANTIQUE PUZZLE", since I have never seen one in the forty years I have been collecting and selling.  Also, I have spent over twenty hours trying to research additional history on this work entitled: "A JOY RIDE". If there is anyone in the world, who can provide more information on this item up for sale, please email me through Ebay email and I will post your information about this work of art  on this auction site, as long as you can provide me with your reference sources. AN ANSWER TO MY REQUEST HAS ARRIVED WITH THE INFORMATION YOU NEEDED ON THIS AUCTION. This print:"A JOY RIDE" WAS RENDERED BY META MORRIS GRIMBALL, WHO WAS AN EMPLOYEE OF GUTMANN & GUTMANN .  Please refer to the paperback book entitled: "The Gutmann & Gutmann Artists- A Published Works Catalog - Bessie Pease Gutmann" by Victor J.W. Christie Ed. D. paperback published: April 1, 2001. I thank the contributor of this information and I am in the process of adding this book to my reference library, since it is easily accessible. This is an image of a little boy and little girl wearing late 1800s to early 1900s clothes taking a ride in a spoke wheeled wooden cart pulled by a goat. The little boy wears a sailor suit and a yellow straw hat and his straight blond hair is cut in bangs and is long on the sides. The boy snaps a whip over the goats head as they travel down a winding dirt path.  His passenger in his cart is a curly brunette haired little girl wearing a pink bonnet and holding a little blond hair doll. They are out for a ride on a nice warm Spring day with the cherry blossoms in bloom on the tree next to the goat cart. They have just passed through the gateway of a tall stone wall. This puzzle is part of the YOUNG AMERICAN PICTURE PUZZLE series. The box cover is labeled with this name in large gold stamped block letters, it should be noted the puzzle itself does not have this gold stamped label on it.  The title of the  image  is found  toward the center  bottom of the image  between the  words :  "PICTURE "  and  "PUZZLE".  The title of Meta Morris Grimball's image is titled: "A JOY RIDE".  It is clearly legible on the puzzle; but, on the cover of the box the gold stamped letter "E" is stamped over part of the lithographed print of the puzzle's title :  "A JOY RIDE".  Each image has embedded in it a tiny notation:  "c. GUTMANN & GUTMANN" in the dirt path in front of the front hooves of the goat. This image has humor built into it: since the children are upset and yelling at the goat to "GO" with their little circular "O" open mouths. The goat is standing still with his hind legs and front legs leaning backward and pushing backward and resisting the little boy's attempt at using his whip!  Typical for an independent thinking and stubborn goat! Who might be smelling the cherry blossoms.Since this children's puzzle has a Spring scene, it is possible it was marketed during an Easter season. Rabbits, ducks, chickens, ponies and goats were animals use in Easter scenes in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Condition of the Lithographed Puzzle: This puzzle has bright colorful  lithography. It is very clean and does not appear to have ever been played with. There is no soiling of the image. A very narrow blade was used to cut this puzzle, as it is very tight as the pieces interlock.  The edges of the cuts are sharp and not rounded from play.Condition of the Lithography of the Puzzle Box: The image on the top of this puzzle box is in Excellent Condition with only fading due to sunlight, and there is are some very small dots of foxing around the edge of this image. This foxing is small, muted and around the edge of the cover so it really does not interfere with focusing at the center of the image with the goat cart action. (Please look at all the numerous color photos of this delightful example of the artistic talents of one of the employees of publisher Gutmann & Gutmann. Structural Condition of the Puzzle Box: The lithographed image on the box cover is a lithographed print that is centered on the top of the cardboard cover. The cardboard cover has a painted mustard yellow sheet of paper that covers it and runs down over the edges and into the inside of the box cover edges.  The print is surrounded by an eight inch of the mustard yellow away from the edge of the top of the box. There is one small dark spot at the edge of the print under the letter "C" which measures about one eight inch. The mustard yellow paper was a thin covering and it is cracked at the top edge of the box cover. If you look underneath you will see that less than twenty-five per cent of the bent cardboard edge is cracked or broken. The sides of the cover of the box has tears in three corners and one tear on the bottom edge of the cover toward the center of the edge. The bottom of this puzzle box holds the puzzle nicely in place. There is a tear in two corners of the bottom of this box and they have allowed the left edge of the bottom and the top edge of the bottom to fold over onto the or over the the puzzle. Dimensions of Puzzle: 11 7/8" wide x 8 7/8" tall x 1/8" thick.Dimensions of the Box: 12" wide x 9" tall x 3/4" deep. Please look at all the pictures on this auction site and enlarge them for your convenience.
